A downloadable project

A small add on for D&D 5e that provides alternative prices for Tools, Animals and Adventuring Gear, re-balancing them to be more historically accurate. While it was designed for D&D, I have provided details on the first page explaining how I decided on my conversions from historical prices to D&D money, so a crafty GM might be able to adjust it for other fantasy systems as well.  The prices set here were based primarily around Kenneth Hodges' (UC Berkeley) medieval price lists.

Prices in this list are balanced around a "modest" or average lifestyle, representing the average cost of goods. Prices can then be adjusted up or down by the DM to account for the wealth of the area, or goods shortages caused by in-story events.

This resource is entirely free.

Features:

  • Handmade items such as clothing and musical instruments, and luxury items like perfume and makeup, are significantly more expensive.
  • Items that would normally be made by people themselves have gotten less expensive.
  • Tool kits have been completely re-priced based on their content as described in XGTE.
  • Animals have been re-priced based on their historical values. These are priced only for the initial purchase of the animal, not upkeep.
  • Lifestyle expenses and the cost of basic trade goods and services have not changed, and been balanced around, so the value of items stays intuitive and easy to pick up.

Gameplay Notes

You will  want to hand out a little less money overall than you do when using PHB prices. Players should be able afford more expensive items like armor and weapons at about the same rate as they would in the base game, since everyday items are largely cheaper, but those big purchases will feel bigger and more expensive.
